Extended Illness Leave

An employee who is absent from work due to an extended illness documented by her/his physician may be granted extended illness leave if an amount of sick leave has been used equal to that amount accumulated in the 12-month period prior to the illness. Extended illness leave is limited to 20 days each fiscal year.

The University reserves the right to require acceptable evidence of illness, injury or disability before approving sick leave benefits. Employees should notify the appropriate supervisor when absence is necessary due to illness. If the length of the absence can be predicted, an employee should give that information to the supervisor so that arrangements can be made for the employee's duties to be assumed during the absence.

Before returning to work after a period of hospitalization or following more than five days of absence due to illness, injury or disability, the employee must provide satisfactory medical evidence of his/her ability to return to work in a full or partial capacity. This notice should be provided to Benefit Services in Human Resources.

Sick leave procedures are also applicable to sickness or disability caused or contributed to by pregnancy or childbirth.
