Civil Service employees in status, provisional, learner and trainee appointments accrue sick leave from the first day of employment. One day is accumulated for each month of service while in a pay status. Individuals on appointments of less than 100 percent accumulate sick leave on the basis of their appointment percentage. There is no limit to the amount of sick leave that can be accrued.
An employee may use accumulated sick leave time for illness, injury, or for doctor or dental appointments. Employees may also use sick leave when their presence is required due to the illness of a spouse, child, or parent. Absences for a period greater than three days that qualify as a serious health condition must be processed as an FMLA leave. Contact Benefit Services at 438-8311 for the FMLA application.
One half of an employee's sick leave accumulated, but not used, from January 1, 1984 to December 31, 1997 will normally be paid out at the employee's regular salary rate at the time of termination of employment. Payment of sick leave excludes any overtime or premiums normally earned when in a work status. Employees may elect to forego payment for all or a portion of the unused compensable sick days at retirement so that the sick leave time may be used for additional service credit in the State Universities Retirement System.
