Graduate Assistant Additional Payments

Additional payment is the means for compensating a graduate assistant for services considered to be above and beyond their regular assignment. All GA additional payments must be approved by the appointing unit supervisor and the Director of Graduate Studies prior to services being rendered.

These services are categorized as either extra pay or administrative increment. Extra pay is compensation for services rendered on an irregular or one-time basis. A graduate assistant can receive a maximum of one such payment each semester. The earnings type for graduate extra pay is GEP.

Administrative increment is reserved for special situations where a graduate assistant has a full-time assistantship and also is receiving monthly compensation for services not related to their assistantship. Monthly stipends for serving as Graduate Student Association president or vice-president would fall into this category. The earnings type for graduate administrative increment is GAI.

To generate an additional payment complete and submit the Additional Payment form to Human Resources. This form identifies the activity, compensation, funding and serves as the request for approval before services are rendered. After prior approval from the Director of Graduate Studies, completed forms must be received in Human Resources, Campus Box 1311, by the 10th of the month in which the first payment is to be made. Sufficient funds must be allocated to the position and the Budget Office and/or Comptroller’s Office must establish the account before the payment will be processed. For specific instructions for submitting additional payments, download our information packet.
