Managing Employee Performance

Managing employee performance is an important and challenging role for supervisors. We do not expect supervisors to approach this responsibility alone and in fact we prefer to counsel supervisors throughout the process to ensure consistency in the application of policies and related discipline.

The Labor and Employee Relations (LER) section of Human Resources has staff ready to assist supervisors with performance challenges for all employment types. Services provided include but are not limited to the following:

  • One-on-one coaching and counseling for supervisors regarding discipline, performance appraisals, non-reappointments, terminations, discharges, dismissals, etc.
  • Performance appraisal review and feedback
  • Assistance in establishing and communicating performance expectations
  • Conflict resolution services for work related issues

At Illinois State University we have several employee types. The techniques, forms and approaches to managing employee performance vary based on employee type.
