Advertising

One of the most important reasons for creating position advertisements and announcements is to recruit as diverse and qualified a pool of applicants as possible. When creating a position advertisement remember:

  • All advertisements, should be clear, concise, and contain all relevant information.
  • Always double-check that the contact person and deadline for application are included.
  • Allow sufficient time to generate applicants.
  • The minimum application deadline is 4 weeks for all advertisements as mandated by ODAA.

Where to Place an Advertisement

Be sure to give serious thought to the placement of advertisements. The media used will vary, depending on whether the search is local, regional, or national in scope. HR will post all the university openings on the Illinois State University Employment web site and (where applicable) on the HigherEdjobs.com web site.

Depending on Affirmative Action requirements, you may be asked to target advertising where underutilization exists. Traditional media (e.g., The Chronicle of Higher Education) often need to be supplemented by advertisements placed in professional society journals, local and regional newspapers, or other "specialty" outlets.  Consider each of the following list as part of your recruiting strategy when deciding Where to Place an Advertisement.
