Tips for finding childcare

Questions to Ask

Many factors need to be considered when seeking childcare. The following list is a good start. However, each age group has specific needs that should be accommodated. Contact the Child Care Resource & Referral Network at www.ccrrn.com/ or 207 W. Jefferson, Suite 301, Bloomington, IL 61701 for a list of questions specific to infant and toddlers, older toddlers and "two’s", preschoolers, kindergartners, non-traditional childcare, and special needs.

The Provider

  • Is the provider licensed? If so, how long?
  • What is the cost and what does it cover?
  • What are the provider’s hours?
  • Does the staff have training in early childhood education?
  • Does the provider show interest in and respect for your child?
  • Does the provider enjoy being with the children?
  • Can the provider handle conflicts in a positive manner?
  • Does the provider give the parents time to discuss the children?
  • Is the children’s individuality accommodated in a positive way?
  • What discipline policies are in place?
  • Does the provider give your child time?
  • Are creativity and independence encouraged?
  • Is transportation available?
  • How many children are cared for?  What are their ages and sex?
  • What is your vacation and illness policy?
  • Do you smoke or have pets?
  • Do you or your staff have CPR, first aid or choking training?
  • Can you provide a list of references?
  • Has the staff submitted to a criminal or background check?
  • What am I expected to provide?
  • How do you handle emergencies?
  • What is the staff turnover rate?

The Curriculum

  • Do activities develop positive feelings toward learning?
  • Are activities available that encourage fine motor and large motor skills?
  • Are children given opportunities to express themselves artistically through art and music?
  • Are daily activities carefully planned with educational, developmental, and social outcomes in mind?
  • Do children have choices in their activities?
  • Does the provider plan field trips?
  • Are children encouraged to engage in activities that develop language?

The Environment

  • Is the environment safe and clean?
  • Is the environment welcoming and comfortable to your child?
  • Are toys safe and interesting to your child?
  • Are outside play areas safe and with equipment appropriate for your child?
  • Is there an area for the child’s personal belongings?
  • Is the bathroom safe and appropriate for children?
  • Is ventilation, heating/cooling and lighting appropriate?
  • Are you welcomed to visit the facility at any time?
  • Are children taken to the bathroom frequently to aid in potty training?
  • Does each child have his or her own individual cot in a room free of distractions?
  • Can the staff see the children at all times?
