Fitness Program Descriptions

Welcome to the Faculty-Staff Fitness Program! We invite you to explore what moves you in our blend of classes tailored to nurture the body, mind and soul. We welcome people of all ages, fitness levels and body sizes to participate in our activities.  Be sure to check our new classes Yoga for Strength and Zumba!!

Badminton

The badminton program has been meeting on ISU’s campus for 40 years!  This group welcomes experienced players. Contact the coordinators for further information:

Basketball

Noon basketball is held in Horton North Gym and Horton Field House.  Play is informal and non-competitive. 

Fitness Lab

Heart health is at your finger tips! The fitness lab is climate controlled and home to a wide variety of cardiovascular equipment, including elliptical trainers, treadmills, recumbent and upright bikes, rowing machines, and Stair Masters. A staff member is on site to supervise and assist during hours of operation.

Lap Swim

This activity allows swimming laps only.  Lap swim is held in Metcalf and Horton pools while awaiting the opening of the new Student Fitness Kinesiology & Recreation building scheduled to open in Spring 2011.

Pilates

This popular class is based from the work of Joseph H. Pilates. Focus is on core strength, flexibility and balance. Enhance the connection between your mind and body while increasing your energy. Instructor: Michelle Klunke who holds a BA in Psychology and a Pilates certification through FiTour.  Michelle has taught classes for the Wellness Program since 2002.

Soccer

This group is informal and all about fun! Kick it around with your fellow colleagues. Contact our coordinators for further information:

Table Tennis

T’ai Chi I

T’ai Chi is referred to as moving meditation. Our T'ai Chi program began in 1993 by Master Yang Yang, and still carrying out his vision and practices is Lilly Meiner our certified T’ai Chi instructor. You must explore this practice of gentleness!

Water Based Classes

Enjoy splashing around in Metcalf’s heated pool. Our classes vary in format, but usually offer some activity in both shallow and deep water. We offer a variety of equipment to enhance your experience and fun: hydro-fit hand buoys and cuffs, noodles, aqua fins and kickboards. Our instructors have varying years of experience and their own unique teaching styles.  Water walking is a class for those who wish to work on their own, and with no instructor leading the session.  Lifeguards are on duty for all water based activities.
Instructors: Jill Belongia, Barb Glover, Shannon O’Hara, Kimi Trippi, and Georgia Martin.

Weight Room

Strength training is beneficial for all ages and individuals. Protect your muscle tissue, and keep your bones strong with this invigorating activity. Our weight room supervisors will create individualized programs and are available to answer questions and offer assistance at all times of operation.  Our supervisor, Matthew Hanks, is a Senior at ISU studying Exercise Science. Matt is a certified personal trainer through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA).  Matt is also a Program Assistant in the Wellness Office and can be reached at 309-438-7003 to answer questions or arrange an appointment in the weight room.

Yoga

Connect with yourself as you’re guided through ancient poses. Our classes blend several styles of yoga for a creative and unique experience. Those with varying levels of experience will find these classes satisfying. Instructors: Dr. Ann Beck, RYT, Jill Belongia, BA, ERYT, and Tona Schenck, MA, MFA, who has taught yoga for the Wellness Program since 2002.  All instructors hold multiple levels of certifications in Yoga training.  Power Yoga is considered an advanced level class. 

Yoga for Strength ~ NEW

If you appreciate the core strength focus of Pilates, yet crave the balance and vigor of Power Yoga…..Yoga for Strength is the class to nurture and challenge you.  Created and taught by Jill Belongia, BA, ERYT.   Jill holds a B.A. in Music and is our Instructor Trainer. Jill is a national Trainer for YogaFit, holds Group Fitness certifications through ACE and AFAA, and has recently earned her Experienced Registered Yoga Trainer (ERYT) certificate through Yoga Alliance.  Jill has taught classes for the Wellness Program since 2005.

Zumba ~ NEW

Zumba is the latest fitness class infusing Latin-based rhythms with motivating music and exciting combinations!  Zumba is more like a party than workout!!   Zumba will be taught by Kristen Nesvacil, M.S.,  Kristen currently is an Assistant Director for Fitness and Informal Programs with the Department of Recreation Services.  Kristen is certified through the following: Group Fitness Instructor through AFAA, ACE Personal Trainer, YogaFit, and Zumba.  Kristen has been teaching fitness for over 7 years and absolutely loves it.  Her true passion is helping people reach their goals by challenging themselves and pushing them to the next level.  Zumba is her favorite class to teach because it is FUN and participants don’t realize you are working out!  Please welcome Kristen!
