The Wellness Program offers health screenings throughout the year at events such as Healthy You Healthy Earth in the fall or Body and Soul: Celebrating Sound Nutrition and Healthy Body Images at ISU on April 12, or by individual appointments. Screenings are not to take the place of seeing a physician. They provide health information that may assist you and your doctor in making health care decisions.

Cholesterol can be both good and bad, so it's important to learn what cholesterol is, how it affects your health and how to manage cholesterol levels in your blood. High blood cholesterol is a major risk factor for heart disease. Understanding the facts on cholesterol will help you reduce your risk for heart attack and stroke and live a healthier life. Visit the American Heart Association Web site.
Prostate cancer develops from cells of the prostate gland. Eventually the cancer cells may spread outside the gland to other parts of the body. Most prostate cancers grow very slowly. Autopsy studies show many elderly men who died of other diseases also had a prostate cancer neither they nor their doctor were aware of. But some prostate cancers can grow and spread quickly. The American Cancer Society recommends health care providers offer the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test and digital rectal examination (DRE) yearly, beginning at age 50 years, to men who have at least a 10-year life expectancy, and to younger men who are at high risk. For more information visit the American Cancer Society Web site.

Blood pressures are taken by wrapping a cuff around the upper arm, inflating it with air, and slowly releasing the air while the clinician listens through a stethoscope for your systolic (during contraction of the heartbeat) and diastolic (during relaxation of the heartbeat) pressure.
Everyone needs to know their blood pressure. High blood pressure, sometimes called the "silent killer," can lead to a stroke and should be taken seriously.
A reading above 140/90 should be followed up with a doctor’s visit.
